Loading... Born a day after the American Independence in Jalandhar, Punjab, India, I've spent most part of my life there. Studied till 5th standard in St. Joseph's Convent School, Jalandhar, and later had to join Apeejay School, Jalandhar as, perhaps, the former school decided boys could be troublesome in a girls' school after 5th. After completing schooling in APJ (till 12th), joined National Institute of Technology [NITJ] (again, in Jalandhar) as a Computer Science & Engineering student in 2005. During the worst period of downtime (recession), got an on-campus placement in Accenture in 2008. Graduating from college took another year after that, and finally joined Accenture in mid-2009. This is my story so far... Btw, you can find me at: facebook twitter last.fm digg librarything granular

has been annoyingly sluggish ever since. Pinging Google sites via command-line shows heavy packet losses. I use the same browsers in Linux (Chrome & Firefox), and the same browsers in Windows. Still, performance of all Google (and related) sites is very poor in Linux (but OK in case of Windows) due to an arcane reason that is still now clear to me. Even (innocuously) normal sites with Google ads take 4-5 refreshes to load properly. And don’t forget almost no site (ok, except some only-HTML stone-age sites still lurking around) in the world today are devoid of those nasty Google ads.

So until I solve the mystery, Google will keep me frustrated in Linux.

GNOME 3 is finally here, and it looks so darn beautiful in the screenshots. I admit, being a KDE fanboy, I was not as excited about this release as I was about KDE 4, but going by the looks, GNOME 3 looks elegant, modern, and [most importantly] stable. Cannot wait to put my hands on it.

No, it hasn’t yet been released. But thanks to Engadget, I was able to download Firefox 4 a day before its official release date. To begin with, I was quite excited for this release as Firefox had been, unfortunately, lagging behind Chrome and Opera in terms of speed in the recent times. I was looking forward to Firefox 4 for a speed boost – both surfing speed and UI loading speed. It was time for Firefox to hit back again in the highly intense browser market.

The installer download was around 12 MB, and the installation/upgrade process was essentially the same as before. I upgraded from my latest FF 3.6.15 installation without hassles. But as expected, more than half of my installed add-ons were incompatible with FF 4, and thus were auto-disabled by FF. No issues, I’ll update those add-ons as soon as new compatible versions are released.

So FF finally loaded, and “what the hell?” A major revamp of the UI. But nothing bad here. The changes were for the good. The new interface is much more Chrome-like than Firefox-like, and I liked it. The status bar has gone; the open/close tab animations are fluid; the page loading icon has changed (for the first time ever?); the go, stop and reload buttons are now one unified button; the search box has been preserved; there is this “Tab Groups” feature (quite like Quick Tabs in Internet Explorer), and probably much more which I haven’t yet explored. All-in-all, the new Firefox 4 is the best of two worlds (Chrome + Firefox), and shows how Chrome should have been. And yes, the page loading speeds were evidently better than 3.6.x. Go download it now if you cannot resist to see the changes yourself.

Firefox 4 gets a thumbs up from me. Go, rule the world again! :)

This was a short poem I wrote when I was in 11th standard (+1 class) in school, that got published in a reputed English daily The Tribune‘s weekly supplement “Windows”.

In spite of the fact that we are humans,
The most superior and intelligent of all creatures.
We make absurd mistakes,
Which are nothing else but
Hatred, disregard and contempt
Shown towards our mates.
Sometimes we are in a dilemma,
To do or not to do,
To accept or to contradict.
But who can predict,
The happenings that will be.
Someday, due to the foolish deeds of some bloke,
There will be suffering all around.
And for this, only humans will carry the blame,
Because they would be the only one
Who played the game.

My ode to Dexter in the form of a short poem. So impressed I was by the fifth episode of the second season “The Dark Defender” that I wanted to right something on the topic. And here it is.

Secrets I hold, secrets untold.
Secrets that protect you, let you be free.
Seeing the innocent safe,
it feels good to be me.

I kill for a purpose,
following certain rules.
Harry’s Code is what I live by,
it lets me make nocturnal schedules.
The code is everything Dad taught,
it keeps me from getting caught.

In the dark I do my work,
around when the devil seeks to lurk.
The murderer, the crime lord, the law bender,
they cannot elude me, for I am the dark defender.

My methods inhuman, dark and brutal.
Before I chop him into a hundred bits,
his guilt even the hardened one admits.
Poly-bags of flesh are all that remain.
Yet the devil lives,
on my glass slides, as blood stain.

Emotions do not bind me, fear does not hold me,
I am a serial killer, a psycho you can call me.
With false pretenses, perhaps I am a sham.
Criminals beware, the innocent don’t fret,
your always lovable Dexter I am.
