Loading... Born a day after the American Independence in Jalandhar, Punjab, India, I've spent most part of my life there. Studied till 5th standard in St. Joseph's Convent School, Jalandhar, and later had to join Apeejay School, Jalandhar as, perhaps, the former school decided boys could be troublesome in a girls' school after 5th. After completing schooling in APJ (till 12th), joined National Institute of Technology [NITJ] (again, in Jalandhar) as a Computer Science & Engineering student in 2005. During the worst period of downtime (recession), got an on-campus placement in Accenture in 2008. Graduating from college took another year after that, and finally joined Accenture in mid-2009. This is my story so far... Btw, you can find me at: facebook twitter last.fm digg librarything granular

Dhobi Ghat

Dhobi Ghat

Aah… another weekend, another two blissful days of playing PC games, peacefully. An added bonus this weekend has to offer are the two movies I’ll be going out for. First one, which is going to be today (company-sponsored), is the critically acclaimed, short-&-sweet flick Dhobi Ghat. It is one of the serious-type drama films one watches mostly for the story, direction and acting. Next will be Yamla Pagla Deewana, tomorrow, sponsored by a dear friend Gagan Walia as his b’day treat. It’s been a week since YPD was released, and from what I’ve heard till now, it is going to be one light-hearted, mindless comedy meant to be enjoyed with gangs. :)

UPDATE 1: Dhobi Ghat was quite a different experience, but a nice film, though most people around me didn’t like it at all, perhaps for it’s abrupt ending.

UPDATE 2: My dear friend Gagan Walia didn’t hold to his promise of Yamla Pagla Deewana, and I didn’t get to see it. :(

Generally, I am regarded as a first-hand troubleshooter. People consult me when I am nearby and their PC is giving some problem. And it hurts me so much when I am not able to solve that problem, like it happened in the morning today.

Narain Karthikeyan is back in Formula 1. That’s a good news. I think he deserves being a regular at F1. Anyway, this time he’s with the HRT (Hispania Racing Team), rather than Jordan for whom he raced previously (2005).

Planning to visit Landmark bookstore today, in Gurgaon, after a long time, as suggested by Aman Mehra.

I recently read a nice speech by P.R. Sarkar where he presents his views on the reasons behind the formation of nations. I could not help myself agreeing to the view that the demarcation of nations does not happen so much because of culture, religion, people, and race, as it does because of the “sentiment” governing one or more of these factors.

Have not done much [PC] gaming of late. I have yet to take out some time for an ‘extended’ gaming session. I have a lots of them waiting to be finished.

Upgraded my Fedora to v14 (Laughlin) a couple of days back. I am happy to see the wonderful changes since v11 (Leonidas). Will be installing Unity‘s latest (v2010.2) tonight.

Do they get lost under the weight of monetary aspirations? Or do they get suppressed by parents’ expectations? Whatever the reasons maybe, the sufferer is always the dreamer – the youth who dreams of becoming a civil engineer but ends up a computer engineer, and vice-versa. At least that is what the situation is like in India. And that starts right from the high school itself, when a student is required to choose from either of the 3 streams – Medical, Non-medical, and Commerce. It generally goes like – Doctors’ children will take (be made to take) medical even if the child wants to be an engineer, and the Businessman’s son will take up commerce. The situation is far worse for the non-medical students. Even if one voluntarily takes up that stream, chances are, they will be forcibly made to take an engineering stream against their wishes when they enter the college.

All this doesn’t end in the college itself; it continues beyond it, in the job as well. When people begin IT jobs as freshers (which most of the engineering graduates do), they are not given choices; instead a specialization (kind of work to be done) is slapped on their faces, selected randomly by none other than a computer program! So, what happens to a computer engineer who wanted to do some hard-core and challenging coding at job? He/she usually ends up doing testing or support work or many other things except coding.

This is the apathy the Indian engineering job scene is suffering from at the moment. People have become so placement-oriented that they choose higher education courses just because those would help them fetch a “high paying job”. It doesn’t matter anymore if one wants to become a mechanical engineer; he’s made to opt for electronics engineering because that is more “lucrative”. In some cases, people take up *any* course just for the sake of graduating from a premier college because the end result – the placements – are usually good there.

I say, it’s time to wake up and start realizing dreams, instead of continuing to sleep and letting your dreams get manipulated by external factors. Sometimes I feel proud (and lucky), not just because I graduated from an institute (college) of national importance, but primarily because I graduated as a computer engineer, what I always wanted to be.

Now that I am free from all the MBA entrance tests I was preparing for, I am thinking a lot. Thinking of watching more movies per week, playing more games & reading more novels per day, and wasting more time per hour. Apart from that, I am working on a plan (read strategy) to get Granular back on track.

Notion Ink Adam

Around 2 weeks ago, the first tablet based in India was about to be released, and I was very excited about it. Talk about specs, and Notion Ink’s Adam beats the over-hyped iPad by miles; talk about its price (US Dollars), and it blows the iPad away. Even before the release, I was busy making plans on saving some hard-earned money to buy the sweet device. But when it was finally made available for pre-ordering, I was left a little disappointed, mainly due to its price. Being an Indian company, I was expecting prices to be much lower than what iPad costs in India. Well, to be honest, the prices were genuine, but what did the damage was the stupendous cost of shipping (a whopping $50!). I think I will wait for the official release, hoping the prices to come down then.

A glorified City 17?

In the morning, as part of my routine, I was “exploring” things when I found this (side picture), which reminded me of City 17, of the Half-Life video game series, as it would have been before destruction.

So, what’s keeping me busy these days? It’s office work, of course. Working on quite a challenging and bigger project has its side-effects as well (working till late and missing daily fruit juice doses in my case). Other than that, I am enjoying the work as it has to do with web development, my area of interest.

Being a strong advocate of open-source and Linux, I read a lot of articles on these topics daily. And I hate when people use words like “switch”, “migrate”, etc. when referring to making the move from Windows to Linux. Why do people, who try to compel people to switch from Windows to Linux, forget that there is always an option called “dualbooting” and that Windows still has the astronomically largest market share? I really hope people use the word “dualboot” more when advocating the use of Linux to others. By the way, I am also writing an article highlighting this matter (Why Switch? Dualboot!), which I intend to share pretty soon.

Talking about Linux, the latest Ubuntu release (10.4; Lucid Lynx) has been getting good reviews from all around. I can hardly wait to get my hands on it. I am planning to install it on my home PC (the one currently in use by my Dad and sister).

Also, two of my good friends, Chandan Puggal (working at Aricent) and Amritpal Singh (working at Accenture) recently joined me in Gurgaon (my present work location). :)

Finally, I did mention it earlier also, but it really is a frustrating life without a proper Internet connection. (Looking upward) God, please me my EV-DO back. Amen.
